What is the role of a school counselor?
A school counselor has many roles within the school setting. Counselors focus on the academic, social/emotional, and career development of all students. No day looks the same for a counselor, as this role often requires one to attend parent/teacher meetings, lead intervention groups, present classroom lessons, respond to emergencies and/or crises, facilitate psychoeducational small groups, connect families with resources, and offer as-needed counseling sessions. Counselors are expected to uphold ethical and professional standards as determined by professional, state, and national laws and guidelines.
